"Observations"

January 17, 2002

It is time for a few observations from the seat. After all the ballyhoo about the midwestern road racing (enduro) groups as to the clubs banding together to form a unified roadracing series it appears to this racer/writer that for the most part it was much to do about nothing. Several club/series allegiances changed but in the end we still have three series and sixteen events for 2003. The more things change the more they stay the same and the end result pretty much-stayed status quo. Until all the groups put personal agendas aside and do what is best for the sport I don't expect much in the way of improvement. By the way I am not going to hold my breath on this one!

Observation number two may sound odd coming from a kart shop owner but many of you are spending too much money on your sport. Over the last few seasons I have seen over and over people going hog wild after their introduction to the sport and in short order they have two or three karts, Lord knows how many engines, a big trailer, and tents and generators and on and on and on. Very soon I am hearing "This is too expensive!" and another racer bites the dust. I of all people know how addictive motorsports can be having dedicated most of my life to this pursuit. What I am saying is use some common sense, don't try to run a national level program when you have a regional program type of budget. Stay with the sport for the long run, have some patience, and have some fun.

Number three has to be the introduction in the shifter classes of the ICC packages. Now don't get me wrong I am not against the ICC program and in fact I am a Pavesi ICC dealer, but many people have unrealistic expectations for the ICC. The ICC party line says that you will not have to have any work done on a box stock engine in order to be competitive, with the exception of sealed engine classes this has never been the case in the history of motorsports and I really doubt if this is going to be any different. The ICC party line says that the engines will be much cheaper to operate, Let me see now, we have an engine that turns up to 2000 rpms more than a Moto based shifter engine and replacement parts are quite a bit more expensive. Cheaper? I don't see how, and besides that don't you think that we ought to race them at least a few times before we say what the expenses will be?

Number four, SKUSA vs. NAKA Stars of Tomorrow! Here we go again.

Number five, When will racing season get here? I for one am champing at the bit.

Well, that ought to be enough mindless rambling for one month. I will leave you with a new (to me) racing adage. "When in doubt, Gas it! It won't help but it ends the suspense."

Meanwhile, race hard, race safe!

God Bless America!
