From the Seat! By Greg Wright Raid Racing, Inc.
This may be a first, a column inspired by a column in another magazine. If anyone hasn't seen it yet, get the January issue of Super Kart Illustrated (formerly Shifter Kart Illustrated) and read SKI's leading light Rob Howden's editorial "New Years Resolutions". Mr. Howden's writing struck a chord with me and his observations on how a negative attitude has come to pervade our favorite Motorsport. Check out any of the Internet karting forums, read some of the magazine articles or spend a day here at the shop answering the phone and waiting on the counter. Over and over I see and hear how This series sucks, or that club sucks, or that track owner sucks ad nauseum.
Mr. Howden seems to think that it is time to put a positive slant on things karting. He is even so bold as to suggest that racer's put their personal and/or political interests to the side and work together for the common good and growth of our sport. Even more shocking was Rob's suggestion that the people in the industry including shop owners, series officials, journalists etc. who make this sport even possible deserve reasonable compensation for their efforts rather than being demonized for trying to eak out a meager profit. Without these people the sport will cease to exist.
The icing on the cake had to be Rob's insistence that we all should be grateful to be involved in such a wonderful form of motorsport and we should relax and By God enjoy it! Yes this guy thinks we should be having fun.
Rob, I agree wholeheartedly and thank you for stating what we all should know to begin with.
The 2005 racing season is fast approaching. Let's go have some fun.
Til' next time Race Hard, Race Safe and God Bless America!
